Welcome

A feature article about The Botany house will appear in next weekend's Sydney Morning Herald Domain section (10.07.2010).

Written by Jane Burton Taylor and aptly named ‚'The Garden House', the lifestyle piece is testament to the novel design and workability of this project.

The finishing stages of the Alma Rd, (Cape Town project) are nearing completion, with kitchen benchtops being installed and outdoor landscaping underway. The owners have done a fantastic job on selecting finishes in keeping with the style of the original heritage building.

Mount View Lodges, Pokolbin, Hunter Valley
The north-facing glazed facades of Baker Kavanagh Architects‚ two eco cabins frame breathtaking views toward Pokolbin, overlooking rolling bushland and vineyards of Mount View in the Hunter Valley.

Large banks of louvred windows and ceiling fans naturally cool the lodges during the Summer, while polished concrete floors, storing heat from the Winter sun, coupled with slow combustion fires in each cabin provide a very comfortable environment for enjoying all the local wines in the Winter months. Rainwater tanks collect water off the monopitch roofs, a wet composting sewerage system is used and hot water is supplied by solar panels.

Bombah Point Eco Cottages
These 6 eco lodges designed by Peter and Jill Madden have been sensitively nestled into the bushlands surrounding Myall Lakes, on the Central coast of NSW.

Careful local environmental consideration in the design see the cottages use: water from large underground rainwater tanks, almost all the electricity from solar panels and sewerage filtered via a bioreactor system utilizing worm composting and reed bed filtration.

Solar panel (PV) Electricity Generation
The Clean energy Council consumer guide provides up to date information on the current government rebates and cash incentives for installing household solar electricity generation for single residential dwellings. It provides details on the NSW government rebates including the Renewable Energy Credits (REC) scheme. REC's are a form of currency similar to shares which can be sold for current market value.  The government provides a certain number of these depending on the size of PV system installed, and your location within Australia.

The NSW government is also offering an attractive proposition, which pays installers of PV systems 60cents per Kilowatthour (kWh) for energy produced and supplied back to the grid. This rate will be fixed for the next 7 years. The current average energy cost is approx. 16cents cent per Kwh.

It is estimated that a 1.5kw PV system correctly installed and orientated should generate a total of 5.85kwh per day, 2,135kwh per year, therefore $1,281.00, toward your annual electricity bill.

Food For Thought - The Lighthouse
The UK's first net zero carbon home and Code Level 6 (the highest level) of the Code for Sustainable Homes.

Designed by Sheppard Robson with Kingspan Off-Site and engineers Arup the Lighthouse prototype is a two-and-a-half storey two/three-bedroom house, part of a family of houses and apartments, which explore how housing can respond to changing demographics to create socially varied sustainable communities. It creates a new model for future living, challenging the traditional house layout to encourage lifestyles, which are inherently 'light' on the world's resources. This house has practically no impact on the local environment and puts very little pressure on utilities. Despite its overwhelmingly green credentials it is a building that does not compromise on the design elements.
