Tennyson Road, Tennyson Point.

This impressive harbour side house is set on 4 levels sloping down from the street toward the water below.

Existing masonry walls and concrete floor slabs were retained; with a new steel frame inserted over the open plan living areas. The bedrooms are contained in a well-insulated timber framed ‘box’, at the top end of the site. Recycled Jarrah shiplap cladding is set against grey painted Fibre cement sheet, with finely crafted Jarrah hardwood windows accentuating the continuity of materials used.

Extensive operable aluminium louvers help shield Western sunlight into the bedrooms, and help regulate internal temperatures. A large pergola filters natural light into the living spaces below, through precisely placed cedar battening, while also providing privacy from neighbouring properties.

A long Jarrah stairway provides the ‘backbone’ for the property linking the various spaces and rooms across the site.

Outdoor areas range from intimate zones echoing the previous house plan with its’ sandstone backdrops, through to the double height entertaining spaces beneath the timber pergola.

Native trees and planting are carefully placed throughout, chosen for their suitability to the coastal environment as well as their nominal maintenance and water requirements.

A timber sundeck sits atop a sandstone wall and steps, providing an ideal high tide launch spot for the client’s canoes.
