Boral Design Awards

AMA has recently entered an exciting competition to design a family house on a typical suburban block using Boral building products.

The competition called for innovative design solutions with sustainability at the forefront of the judging criteria.

AMA has opted for a simple, sectional building designed on a grid to suit the chosen building products, so reducing material wastage, and speeding up construction time.

Core conceptual intentions of the design were to:

- Create a private oasis for living on a typical suburban block.

- Site specific design response, with a strong emphasis on sustainability. From design principles through to construction techniques and on going life cycle energy usage of the house.

A striking curved tile roof captures all available rain water and provides high amounts of thermal mass, facing South to help regulate internal temperatures throughout the year.

A prefabricated steel frame will be fixed to a masonry 'spine wall' - plywood panels provide a bracing substructure to the house. The ground floor is suspended to allow unimpeded stormwater run off.

Harvested rainwater is collected in a series of rainwater tanks that are fitted within the suspended floor of the house, providing fantastic insulation to the ground floor of the house.

Rainwater will be used for toilet flushing, washing machine as well as for drip irrigation for landscaping, including the proposed vegetable gardens toward the front of the site.

Greywater is also proposed to be filtered through a reed bed at the bottom of the sloping site.
