Yorkeys Knob, Cairns.
The design brief for the 17 waterfront units, just above Cairns, was to ‘showcase’ sustainability methods and materials not often found in high-end luxury multi unit residential accommodation.
The units are arranged around a large central courtyard or atrium.
Cross ventilation would be maximised, with large openings facing the sea, and small opening facing the central courtyard, drawing breezes across and through the unit. Concrete floor panels, with lightweight infill panels allow heat gained during the day to escape at night. Rainwater would be harvested from the main roof and stored in concrete tanks for reuse in toilet flushing, topping up the plunge pools and irrigating the landscaping.
Innovative planning allows the living spaces of the dwellings to capitalise on the immediate ocean views.
